My name is Mark Murchie and I am the Combined Youth Director for Rummel COB, Scalp Level COB, and Windber COB. The youth from the three churches join together to form one youth group. Any youth in grades 6-12 are welcome and invited to be a part of our activities. I always encourage the youth to bring their friends and would love to see more youth at our activities. Through our activities, we seek to show what it means to have a relationship with Jesus Christ, how to have good fun, and how to love and serve others like Jesus did. The purpose of our youth group is to lead youth to salvation in Jesus Christ and for each youth to be guided and mentored in their relationship with Jesus as they become the men and women God has created them to be.
Some quick information about me: I have been in the Windber area since the fall of 2007 as youth director and during that time I got married to my beautiful wife Ashley in August, 2009. In October, 2010, we welcomed into the world our first child, Anne, and she has brought a ton of fun and joy to our lives. Ashley and I both coach Junior High Track and Field and I also coach Varsity Soccer at Windber.
During the school year (September-May), Youth Group meets weekly on Sunday nights from 7:00 – 8:30 at one of the three churches. This fall, 2011, we will be at Rummel COB during the month of September, at Windber COB in October, and at Scalp Level COB in November. During the winter months of December, January, and February, we will repeat the same cycle. For the Spring of 2012, we will meet at Windber COB in March, Scalp Level COB in April and Rummel COB in May.
Throughout the year we also do a bunch of other fun activities, service projects and more. This past summer, we went on our first mission trip. We went to Cincinnati and did a lot of varying service projects and had a blast. We will be planning on going on more mission trips in the summer’s to come.
Throughout the year as well, my wife Ashley and I have weekly Bible studies with the guys and girls seperately for those who are interested.
Ashley and I also try to come out to as many as possible of the youth’s sporting events, guard shows, plays, etc. So if you want to get involved in youth group, let us know what activities they are in so we can support them and get to know them.
Our youth group sponsors a kid named Nattakit through Holt International. Holt International is an organization whose purpose is to find families for orphans to be adopted into. While Nattakit is waiting to be adopted, he needs someone to step in and sponsor him for $30 a month which is where we come in. The $30 a month goes toward providing his daily needs, any medical needs, and educational needs while he waits. Each week at youth group, I collect any donations for Nattakit and then we spend time praying for him. If each youth brings a dollar or two a week, we would easily cover his monthly sponsorship. If possible, we could look into sponsoring a second child.
Other activities that the youth are encouraged to be part of are Character Development Club and Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). Character Development Club is for any Windber Area middle or high school student and meets in Mrs. Rogers room in the middle school Tuesday mornings at 7:30. We have snacks there and I lead a short Bible devotion for the youth that come. FCA happens on Thursday mornings in Mr. McGough’s room and is only for high school students. It is student led and some weeks the students lead the devotions, other weeks there are guest speakers and sometimes we watch a short Christian video. Although Athletes is in the title, it is a club that anyone is welcome and encouraged to come to.
Ashley and I love all the youth in the three churches and look forward each week to seeing them. If you have any questions, feel free to call me anytime at 814-270-7586.
